Japan Food Guide

Japan Food Guide

Japan’s food scene is genuinely hard to summarize. Every region has its own flavors, ingredients, and history. This Japan food guide tries to make sense of it all.

It covers eight major areas, from Hokkaido in the cold north to Okinawa’s tropical south. You may wonder where to begin. That depends on what you’re curious about. Tohoku and Kanto now have dedicated guides for every prefecture. Tokyo and Sendai are the obvious entry points, though the quieter prefectures often reward you more. Akita’s hot pots and Yamagata’s riverside stew parties are hard to find anywhere else.

This Japan food guide is organized two ways: by region, and by dish type. Both paths lead somewhere good. Use the sections below to find the food that calls to you.
